Shri AnandPur Sahib Ji
Shri AnandPur Sahib Ji is one of the most important sacred places of the Sikhs and is closely linked with their religious traditions and history.
It is located about 95kms north-west of Chandigarh. Anandpur is framed between shivalik hills to the east and the Satluj River farther away in the
west, with vast green expanses and profound tranquility all around.
It is closely linked with sikh religious traditions and history. The ninth Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur, purchased the site from the ruler from
the ruler of Bilaspur in the year 1665 and founded AnandPur Sahib near the ruins of ancient Makhowa. He called it Chak Nanki after
the name of his mother. The town became properous and reached its zenith in the times of Guru Gobind Singh, who spent 25 years of his life here.
On March 30, 1689 Guru Sahib laid the foundation of a new town and named it Anandpur Sahib. To defend from external threads, Guru Gobind Singh
constructed five forts around the town and joined them with earthworks and underground tunnels. The construction began in 1689 and
took over ten years to complete. It was here that Guru Gobind Singh baptised the first five Sikhs called the Panj Piaras, the
five beloved ones in 1699. The Panj Piare had offered him their heads to uphold Dharam, thus creating the nucleus of the
Khalsa. Chak Nanaki and Anandpur Sahib as well as some adjoining villages from the present city of Anandpur Sahib.
The Takht Sahib is a square hall with a balcony in front overlooking a spacious courtyard on a lower level. In the middle of inner domed
room are placed some weapons preserved as sacred relics. The space being limited on the top of the hill, the sarovar is on the plain ground
west of Takht Sahib. A large spacious pavilion is also around for larger congregation. Although the town is small but on the occassion of
Hola Mohalla every
year in the month of March it booms into boisterous activities and recaptures its old glory and splendour.
Hola Mohalla:
Anandpur Sahib comes to life every year on the occassion of Hola Mohalla. The tradition dates back to the times of the 10th Guru, Sri Guru Gobind
Singh Ji. The Guru decided that the occassion of the festival of Holi, fun and frolic and color splashing, be the occassion for the display of the
martial spirit of his people and he gave this festival of Holi a more mascuiline name of Hola Mohalla. Each year Hola Mohalla marks the
congregation of lacs of devotees from all over the country for the festival of color and gaiety.
The Takht Keshgarh Sahib is one of the major pilgrimage attractions of Anandpur sahib. People from all over the world come to their place of worship
to pay homage to their revered Guru. Located on a hill top, Takht Keshgarh Sahib comproses of an enclosed square space which is attached
with an open balcony. A collection of holy weapons is showcased at one portion of this structure.
