Char Dham Yatra
Char Dham is referred to the four Hindu religious sites in Uttarakhand state of India. These are:
- Yamunotri Dham
- Gangotri Dham
- Badrinath Dham
- Kedarnath Dham
Nested in the lap of majestic Himalayas, these four sites are the epicenter of religious activity in north India. Traditionally, the Char Dham
yatra is undertaken from the west to the east. Thus, the yatra starts from Yamunotri, then proceed to Gangortri and finally to Kedarnath
and Badrinath. Each of these locations have its own significance in Hindu religion.
Yamunotri Dham
Yamunotri, the source of Yamuna River and the seat of the Goddess Yamuna, is one of the four sites in India's Char Dham Pilgrimage. The
sacred shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, perched atop a flank of
Bandar Poonch Peak (3615 m) & situated opposite to Gangotri. The actual source a frozen lake of ice & glacier (Champasar glacier) located
on the kaliand mountain at the height of 4421m above sea level, about 1 km further up, is not frequented generally as it is not accessible and hence
the shrine has been located on the foot of the hill. The tiny Yamnua has icy cold water and its absolute innocence and the infantile purity
heightens that deep feeling of reverence, Yamunotri for the devout.
Gangotri Dham
Gangotri temple is 18th century temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is located near a sacred stone where king Bhagirath worshipped
Lord Shiva Ganga is believed to have touched earth at this spot. Accordingly, to another legend, Pandavas performed the great "Deva Yagna"
here to a tone the death of their kinsmen in the epic battle of Mahabharata. The temple is an exquisite 20ft. high structure made of white granite.
Badrinath Dham
Badrinath is a Hindu holy town and a nagar panchayat in Chamoli district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is most important of the four
sites of India's Char Dham pilgrimage. The town gets its name from the Holy temple of Badrinath. Badrinath area is referred to as Badari or
Badarikaashram in Hindu scriptures. It is a place sacred to Vishnu, particularly in Vishnu's dual form of Nara-Narayan.
Thus in Mahabharata, Krishna, addressing Arjuna says, "Thou wast Nara in a former body, and with Narayan for thy companion, didst perform
dreadful austerity at Badari for many myriads of years.
One legend has it that when the goddess Ganga was requested to descend to earth to help suffering humanity, the earth was unable to withstand
the force of her descent. Therefore the mighty Ganga (Ganges) was split into twelve holy channels, with Alaknanda one of them.
Kedarnath Dham
Kedarnath is the amongest the holiest pilgrimages for the devout Hindu. It is set midst the stunning mountainscape of the Garhwal Himalayas
at the head of the Mandakini River. Lord Shiva manifested in the form of Jyotirlingam or the cosmic light. kedarnath is the highest among
the 12 jyotirlingas. This ancient and magnificant temple is located in the Rudra Himalayas range. The temple, over a thousand years old is
built of massive stone slabs over a large rectangular platform. Ascending through the large grey steps leading to the holy sanctums
we find inscriptions in Pali on the steps. At the approach of winters in the month of November, the holy statue of Lord Shiva, is carried down
from Kedarnath to Ukhimath, and is reinstated at Kedarnath, in the first week of May. It is this time, that doors of the temple are thrown
open to pilgrims, who flock from all parts of India, for a holy pilgrimage. The shrine closes on the first day of Kartik (Oct-Nov) and reopens
in Vaishakh (Apr-May) every year. During its closure the shrine is submerged in snow and worship is performed at Ukhimath.
